The Kuril Islands’ Ebeko volcano spewed ash to a height of 3.5 km

The Ebeko volcano on the Kuril island of Paramushir on Monday spewed a column of ash to a height of 3.5 kilometers, the press service of the Main Directorate of the Russian Emergency Situations Ministry for the Sakhalin region reported.

“According to information from the Sakhalin rapid response group in case of volcanic eruptions of the Institute of Geology and Geology of the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, on the evening of September 16, an ash emission occurred from the Ebeko volcano at a height of 3.5 kilometers. The plume extended to the south for a distance of more than five kilometers,” the department said in a statement.

According to dispatchers, no ash fall was observed in the city of Severo-Kurilsk and no smell of hydrogen sulfide was detected. There is no threat to the livelihood of the population. There are no international flight routes in the area of ​​the volcano, and no tourist groups have been registered.

The 1,156-meter-high Ebeko volcano is located on Paramushir Island, seven kilometers northwest of Severo-Kurilsk, in the northern part of the Vernadsky Range. Regular emissions (weak to moderate) have been ongoing since October 20, 2016, which is normal activity for the volcano. The record emission was recorded on August 31, 2018. Then, a plume of smoke rose to a height of six kilometers from the volcano’s new crater, formed in 2017.
