The Madrid University Residence Association and the Complutense University have been campaigning against these practices for years.
The Madrid University Residence Association is made up of 39 centres attached to six universities and has just over 6,000 residents. The Complutense is the largest in terms of students in all of Spain and where, in previous years, cigarettes were put out on bodies, people spat on them and even raw fish was eaten (this act was carried out on some girls, who were also undressed and exposed in a video that spread like wildfire last year and ended up in the juvenile court) was very common at the start of the school year.
For this reason, for seven years now, the UCM and the association have been launching the campaign A New September at this time, the latest edition of which was presented on the 6th at the Alfonso XIII Botanical Garden, on Complutense Avenue. According to the educational entity, both parties showed “their union in the firm defense of mutual respect and healthy coexistence, in the presentation of the ‘anti-hazing’ campaign.”
During this academic year 2024/25, a tool “Self-assessment on coexistence and care in university residence” was presented. The aim is for university students to identify for themselves behaviors that, due to their subtle or minor nature, go unnoticed and revive unwanted situations.
They thus become aware that any behavior that is not aligned with mutual respect and healthy coexistence is permissible in society. Since last year, there has also been a telephone number for psychological assistance.
