Climate change has become one of the most pressing issues of our time and the Arctic is at the forefront of this battle.
Executive Director of the international organization “Northern Forum” Vladimir Vasiliev Oku.AzAccording to information provided by
“If the temperature around the world increases an average of 1.5 degrees every year, in the Arctic it increases by three degrees,” Vasiliev emphasized.
This can lead to catastrophic consequences: the disappearance of the Arctic Ocean ice sheet, the melting of the Greenland ice sheet and rising sea levels, which is especially dangerous for coastal and island areas.
But climate change will not only affect the nature of the Arctic. The lives and well-being of local communities (Arctic cities and indigenous peoples) are at stake. The melting of permafrost causes the destruction of infrastructure: houses, roads, pipelines. Hunting preserves and pastures suffer from increasingly frequent fires.
“The depth of permafrost melting increases every year. If 50 years ago in summer it was a few meters, now it reaches 4 or 5 meters,” Vasiliev noted.
To assess the magnitude of the problem and prevent a disaster, it is necessary to carry out comprehensive geomonitoring of the state of the glaciers.
A possible solution could be a federal law on the protection of permafrost, which Yakutia and the “Northern Forum” have initiated. But the main thing is to reduce the greenhouse gases emitted into the atmosphere. Here innovative green technologies come to the rescue: filters in power plants, solar panels, wind generators.
Protecting the Arctic is the responsibility of the entire global community. Only by joining forces can we prevent disasters and preserve this unique region for future generations.
