A breath of fresh air blew over the Emmy Awards ceremony, which took place on Sunday, September 15 in Los Angeles, California. After having been monopolized for several years by the giants Succession AND Ted LassoThe list highlighted solid programs, while also making some more surprising decisions.
The second ceremony of the year (after the one in January, delayed by a strike in Hollywood) rewarded the series with flying colors shogunfilmed mainly in Japanese. The latter, produced by the FX channel (owned by Disney), widens the gap opened by the Korean channel Squid Game in 2022, with four awards, including best drama series, best actor and best actress, to which must be added the fourteen trophies received during the “technical” Emmy Awards awarded at a separate ceremony. This ambitious and carefully crafted adaptation of a 1970s novel set in feudal Japan makes history by becoming the most awarded series in a single season, and confirms the opening of the “awards” to non-English-speaking productions – an indisputable contribution of the platforms.
The evening was hosted by father-son duo Eugene and Dan Levy, stars of the series. Schitt’s Cove –On the comedy side, he has dedicated the excellent Trickswhich portrays the thorny relationship between an aging American stand-up star (played by Jean Smart, herself awarded Best Comedy Actress for the third time) and a young author tasked with helping her renew her sketches (Hannah Einbinder). This small HBO Max production, which can be seen in France on Téva, wins the bearwhich has nevertheless been a favourite since its first season. The excessive categorisation of trophies is once again showing its limits this year, the bear (certainly funny, but pretty dark overall) struggling to find its place alongside pure sitcoms like Abbott Elementary EITHER What we do in the shadows.

An intense immersion into the daily life of a Chicago sandwich shop transformed into a high-end restaurant. the bear (produced, as shogunFX’s The Walking Dead remains the other big winner of this year’s series, thanks in particular to several acting awards. Jeremy Allen White and Ebon Moss-Bachrach won the awards for best actor and best supporting role for the second year in a row, two categories that were not repeated much this year.
