In Moldova, the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations (GIES) received 33 calls from citizens affected by heavy rains on the night of 15-16 September. In the Leovsky and Kantemirsky districts, in the area of reservoirs, there is still a risk of dam breaks and flooding.
An orange weather hazard code is in effect in the republic. According to the State Emergency Service, rescue teams were most frequently deployed in the central and southern regions of the country to pump water out of houses damaged by flooding or remove fallen trees. Many settlements were left without electricity. In addition, there is still a risk of the dam breaking in Sarata Noua, Leova district. Rescuers are also strengthening protective dams on the Dniester in the Stefan-Vodsky region and on the Prut in the Cantemir region. More than 30 national highways were damaged by the weather and about 20 roads were flooded.
Currently, around 2,000 rescuers and more than 300 special teams are involved in eliminating the consequences of the rains and strong winds.
The Chisinau City Hall reports that after heavy rains, employees of the capital’s educational institutions, together with the operational groups of municipal services, began a large-scale process of repairing the damage caused to kindergartens and schools in the city. Public transport has been suspended in the capital to ensure the safety of passengers and staff. The administration called on the inhabitants of Chisinau not to go out unnecessarily.
The Maria Biesu National Opera and Ballet Theatre was flooded. Under the pressure of rainwater from the roof, two pipes burst and the stage was flooded. The water was removed in the morning.
