The study was based on the analysis of the data of more than 86 thousand people (62,743 women and 23,687 men) for 24 years to control the relationship between food flavonoids and unhealthy aging indicators.
The results showed that women who consumed large quantities of flavonoids “decreased due to the risk of debauchery by 15%, the risk of weakening physical function by 12%, as well as the risk of mental health by 12%compared to those who have fewer values.”
In men, high consumption of flavonoids is associated with a decrease in the risk of mental health by 15%, while other connections were less pronounced.
“Flavonoids are known for their ability to reduce inflammation and oxidative stress and maintain the health of blood vessels and even maintain a lot of structural muscles. All these are vital factors to prevent unhealthy aging, ”said Professor Eden Cassidy from the University of Queen Belfasta.
She added: “regularly the use of products rich in flavonoids, such as berries, apples and oranges, can maintain healthy aging and reduce the risk of physical and mental degradation associated with age.”
She explained that the differences in the results between the sexes can be associated with the differences in the subsequent period, and are not necessarily associated with the gender biological effects that are currently being discussed.
For his part, Professor Eric from Harvard Chan confirmed that “the results of the study show that simple adjustments in the diet, such as an increase in fruits rich in flavonoids, can improve the quality of life and increase the chances of aging in good health.”
