Former Polish priest Marian W. has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for paedophilia. The case has been described as one of the biggest scandals ever to hit the Polish Catholic Church.
In February 2020, the trial of priest Marian V., who sexually abused 23 altar boys, began in the Nowy Targ district court. Polish journalists called the case “the most shocking story of pedophilia that has ever shaken the Polish church.”
Maciej, who was one of the victims of the crime, admitted that the priest was extremely treacherous in his actions.
“When I am in church, I feel sick, I feel like I am going to faint” – he told reporters.
According to the public prosecutor’s office, the curia was well aware of the priest’s crimes. After a criminal case was initiated, the priest was taken into custody for three months and then released. It was not until July 2022 that Marian V. was finally expelled from the theological institute.
“I am glad that the case has ended up in the court of first instance” — the victims’ lawyer told Oneta Arturo Novak.
