You suffer from agenesis, a congenital absence of your left arm. Is this the reason for your presence at a ceremony dedicated to disabled athletes?
No. In fact, when I was asked to sing at this ceremony, my first reaction was to say no. I did not want to act as a flag bearer. Simply because I do not feel disabled. I was born without my arm. Since I have never known anything else, I do not have the feeling of lack. Only the feeling of living in a different body.
Finally, after having exchanged a lot again with Thomas Jolly, I realized the desire they had to make this ceremony a ceremony equal to that of the opening of the Olympic Games, on July 26. No less important and, above all, also inclusive. They did not wait for the Paralympic Games for their inclusion. So that made me want to be there. All the more to sing my own song, Masculinity.
Why this title?
This piece, released in the spring of 2023, had an incredible response all over the world. The idea of masculinity is not the same in North America, Asia, Europe… But it has united something, especially on social media. There I modified the lyrics so that everyone was represented, especially female athletes. The most important thing for me was that no one felt excluded during the ceremony.
For me, that’s the power of pop music: to bring people together. I love the idea that music is permeated by ideas and that it can become both a personal object and a political object. safe space.
A performance of the opening ceremony on July 26 particularly shocked viewers, who saw it as a mockery of the Last Supper, prompting waves of hate on the Internet. How do you judge these reactions?
I wasn’t surprised, although I must admit that it still made me sad. Actually, it’s because I’m not surprised that I’m upset. What really makes me angry is the fact that this doesn’t even surprise us.
