“Les Ogres”, the investigative book by journalist Víctor Castanet on abuses in private nurseries

Based on the abuses observed within the People & Baby group, considered the black sheep of the early childhood sector, journalist Victor Castanet, in his new investigation “Les Ogres”, highlights the deviations of a system funded by public money. We publish some extracts.

A 2-year-old “scoundrel”

(…) The story begins (…) in the summer of 2018. (…) Zohra* goes online and discovers a private nursery located a few hundred metres from her future home, in Villeneuve-d’Ascq. [Nord].

The establishment – Baby City – belongs to the People & Baby group, about which she knows almost nothing, except that it is one of the giants of the sector. (…) When you call you will not find the nursery, but a representative from the central office, she teaches me. The saleswoman then said that it was going to be very complicated, that there were no more places available, that the nursery was full. After the cold blows (…)the commercial gets hot. “He asks us what my husband Bilal and I do*Zohra continues. I explain to him that we are private doctors. And then he exclaims: “Maybe I have a solution for you! I can get you a place if you accept a company cot. It’s 14,000 euros a year. But in the end it won’t cost you almost anything. It’s tax-free through the family tax credit.”

The People & Baby representative takes advantage of a grey area in the regulations. Normally, as the name suggests, “business cradles” They are financed by companies for the benefit of their employees. These employees must be subject to corporate tax and can ultimately benefit from tax deductions of around 80% of the amount spent. In this case, the situation is very different: Bilal is not an employee of a company but an associate of a group of doctors. The parents will find themselves paying the family part (the hours of presence of the child) and the commercial part (reservation of the cot). What is even more problematic is that they will not be able to legally benefit from all the tax deductions promised by People & Baby.

(…)

A few weeks later, the family (…) It is located in the Alto Borne district. (…) They take the opportunity to chat with the director; the current passes instantly. Laurie Renard makes them understand that they have probably been deceived. “She doesn’t understand why we were forced to assume a business base of 14,000 euros per year. Zohra reports, annoyed. She tells us: “But you should have called me. I would have caught you live. The nursery is back in operation. It is almost empty. We have no one at the moment. » (…) While speaking to the team, Zohra learned that the nursery was part of the 1,2,3 Soleil network, before being bought, shortly before her arrival, by the People & Baby group: “It was not yet a nursery imbued with the mentality of the People. »
