THE Operation Crossing the Strait (OPE) The year 2024 ended this Sunday, setting a new record. There were 847,429 vehicles, 9.3 percent more than in 2023, the highest number recorded in the 30 years of existence of this system, in its round-trip phases from the European Union to Morocco.
They have been 3,442,770 passengers (6.9 percent more) than last year) have crossed the strait smoothly and safely during the three months it was developed.
The most popular route was once again Algeciras to and from Tangier, with 44 percent of global routes.
The system, coordinated by the General Directorate of Civil Protection and Emergencies of the Ministry of the Interior, has counted a total of 12,012 ship rotations (8.4 percent more than in 2023).
Operation Crossing the Strait has been organized since 1986 and manages the round-trip transit of citizens of Maghreb origin from several countries from Europe to North Africa during the summer season. The aim is to make the transit of Maghreb citizens across the peninsula smooth and secure. This is the most complex and unique operation taking place between two continents and which, this year again, took place smoothly and without incident.
Operation Crossing the Strait 2024 was possible thanks to the vast system that operated at full capacity, coordinated between the General Directorate of Civil defense and the General Directorate of Traffic.
In addition, many administrative bodies participated, such as State Ports and the General Directorate of the Merchant Navy, belonging to the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda; the General Directorate of Public Health, of the Ministry of Health, and the delegations and sub-delegations of the Government where the ports of embarkation are located.
