Dengue-carrying tiger mosquitoes rediscovered in Berlin

Dangerous tiger mosquitoes have been discovered in a cemetery in Berlin-Pankow. Adult mosquitoes and mosquito larvae imported from Asia that are capable of transmitting diseases were found here, Berlin’s health department said.

In recent years, the presence of the tiger mosquito has been confirmed several times on household plots in Treptow-Köpenick, Neukölln and Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf.

Tiger mosquitoes have black and white stripes, are active during the day and are ready to bite. The insects breed in small artificial accumulations of water, such as watering cans, flower pots or vases in a cemetery. Therefore, it is recommended to replace the stagnant water in such containers weekly and empty the stagnant water.

Tiger mosquitoes may be found in other places in Berlin. The health department has therefore asked Berliners to send photos by email if they find a specimen that could be a tiger mosquito.

EADaily He added that tiger mosquitoes are native to tropical regions of Southeast Asia. Their bite is harmless, but at high temperatures the insect can transmit dengue, Zika, chikungunya and other arboviral infections.
