According to a new report by the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) released on September 16, American universities are experiencing a significant increase in anti-Israel and anti-Semitic activity. The document notes that such demonstrations are accompanied by support for terrorism and are aimed at discriminating against Jewish students.
The study documented a sharp increase in incidents of vandalism, harassment and physical assault over the past year. Based on the data collected, a ranking of educational institutions with the highest number of anti-Semitic incidents was compiled.
The ten universities with the most frequent incidents of antisemitism included: Columbia University (New York) with 52 incidents, University of Michigan at Ann Arbor (38), Harvard (36), University of California at Berkeley (36), UCLA (35), Rutgers University of New Brunswick (33), Stanford (30), Cornell (27), University of Washington (26), and University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (25).
According to the ADL, there were 2,087 anti-Israel and anti-Semitic incidents between June 2023 and May 2024. This includes attacks, vandalism, harassment, demonstrations, and boycott and divestment decisions. Compared to the previous year, the number of such incidents increased by 477%.
In addition, the ADL Center for the Study of Extremism’s annual report recorded a record number of incidents, including 28 cases of physical violence. It also documented 1,418 protests, 360 incidents of verbal or written violence, 201 acts of vandalism, and 80 proposals to boycott Israel, of which 71 proposals were approved.
