With the verse Dionysis Savvopoulos, “Greek communities and history, groups do” the show today is dealing with Greek culture in Brussels and not only.

From at least four generations of immigrant Greeks, Belgium accepts a prosperous community. The Greeks arrived here like traders and sailors, but then others were added, who came to work on coal mines. Many fried and made their lives in this country of the North.

In the 1980s, employees of European institutions were added to these first economic immigrants. And finally, the financial crisis in Greece was brought by the fourth generation of young immigrants. About 50,000 Greeks are estimated in Belgium, many of them in Brussels.

But Belgium is not just Brussels. For example, hundreds of Greek sailors who were bored for Europe and foreign trips passed from the port of Antwerp. It was not always easy, their life had many difficulties.

But their stay enriched Belgian cities and art: cafes, restaurants, night clubs opened, local residents loved Greek culture and accepted it. The topic continues today with musical events, dance groups, Greek choirs and artists who emphasize the history and stigma of Greece in this place.

And for this special show, Maria Psara speaks with special guests.

The studio has:

  • Polyxen Roumeliotis, an artist and historian who, along with Chris, did a lot of work in Greece research in Belgium

  • Franz de Clerk, officially translator, among other things, European institutes, as well as a musician, founder of the CosmocRets group and the owner of an art base in the Brussels music scene

And Christos Gakudis, lawyer, insurance ombudsman, as well as the artistic director and conductor of the Greek choir Brussels.
