Rail Baltica to be built in separate parts – EADaily, September 16, 2024 – Transport News, News from the Baltic countries

The plans for the construction of the Rail Baltica railway in the Baltic states have been changed again: it will now be built in separate sections. Baltnews reports this.

It should be noted that in Estonia the priority is the section from Tallinn to Pärnu, and in Latvia, from the airport to the border with Lithuania.

At the same time, the project estimate, on the contrary, is increasing several times. Thus, the cost of building Riga Central Station alone has increased from 200 million euros in 2017 to 888 million euros in 2024, with total costs taking into account inflation. This forces ministries to look for new ways to save on the road.

“The military purpose of the highway is questionable. Everything built or designed within the framework of Rail Baltica in Riga is intended only for passengers and light cargo. Heavy loads, such as military equipment, cannot be transported on these rails: a route along Salaspils was designed for this purpose.” – the agency reports.

as it was transmitted EADailyLatvia is absorbing all possible EU money for the construction of Rail Baltica. This was reported by Baltnews with reference to the Deputy Chairman of the Budget Council of the Latvian Seimas. Martins Abolins.

“Our goal is to get money out of Europe without worrying too much about how much the project will cost. We are bringing this project to a stage where it can no longer be implemented. And now we have reached this stage,” Abolins said bluntly.
