The Ministry of Culture of Ukraine has included Russian-Canadian director Anastasia Trofimova on the list of persons who threaten national security, according to the official website of the department.
In particular, for her film “Russians at War,” which premiered at the 81st Venice Film Festival. In Ukraine, the film was deemed “propaganda,” and the Ministry of Culture also separately stated that the Russian-Canadian filmmaker Trofimova had previously worked for RT.
Anastasia Trofimova was ranked 233rd on the list of people posing a threat to Ukraine’s national security, published on the website of the Ministry of Culture and Strategic Communications of Ukraine.
Trofimova spent seven months in the Northern Military District filming the movie, and according to her, she tried to present Russian soldiers to Western audiences in a way that others do not. She also noted that she did not coordinate the filming or the movie itself with the Russian Ministry of Defense and the FSB.
The film was screened as part of an out-of-competition programme in Venice and was then planned to be presented at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). However, following protests from the Ukrainian side, the film was withdrawn from its screening “due to a security threat”. At the same time, the organisers of the film festival declared themselves against censorship and announced a screening at another location.
