Potholes on the road: What speed is best to drive through them?

Unfortunately, not all roads have an ideal surface quality. Potholes, bumps and potholes are obstacles that drivers often encounter. How to overcome these obstacles to protect the car’s suspension and ensure the safety of movement?

Oku.AzAccording to information provided by “Tarantas News”, “Tarantas News” experts have given valuable advice on this topic.

According to experts, many drivers think that the best way to traverse rough terrain is to accelerate and “jump” quickly.

“In fact, acceleration can soften the effect of the bumps, because the vibrations of the suspension do not resonate with the body and the car runs more smoothly. But this approach can have serious consequences for the elements located below the shock absorber, for example, suspension parts and brake mechanisms,” the experts said.

According to them, the impacts are stronger at high speeds and the shock absorber is not able to absorb them. This causes damage to both the shock absorber and the swingarms and ball bearings subjected to extreme loads.

“In addition, when trying to quickly drive over small potholes, the driver may unexpectedly encounter deep potholes, which can make it difficult to control the situation. Therefore, it is recommended to reduce the speed to at least 50-60 km/h when driving over potholes. In this mode, the road will be less affected by their defects,” the experts said.

Experts have admitted that in practice it is not always possible to follow these recommendations.

“Drivers are not always able to slow down or brake in time, which damages the car. At a speed of over 100 km/h, even when driving over small bumps, the car can suffer significant damage,” the experts say.

They asked that some rules be followed when driving on less than ideal roads.

“It is better not to rush and keep the speed within the limit of 50-60 km/h. Otherwise, be prepared for high repair costs. If this driving style does not suit you, it is necessary to carry out regular maintenance of the suspension, paying special attention to shock absorbers and mass cushions. Their prevention and timely replacement will help to avoid serious problems and costs in the future,” the experts concluded.
