Luis Pedro Marco de la Peña, Basque Deputy Minister of Transport, will be the new president of ADIF

Oscar Puente now has a new president of ADIF, after the dismissal of Angel Contreras last week. As this newspaper has learned, Luis Pedro Marco de La Peña, Basque Deputy Minister of Transportwill be appointed president of the public company by the Council of Ministers on Tuesday.

Marco de La Peña is the number 2 of the Department of Sustainable Mobility of the Basque Country, led by the socialist Susana García Chueca. That is to say, he is part of the “quota” of the Basque Socialist Party in the regional executive (and which he shares with the PNV).

Born in Santander in 1969, he is a Civil Engineer, Canals and Ports from the University of Cantabria. He has been Deputy Minister of Transport since 2020. Previously, he held important positions in several companies dedicated to civil engineering and construction in the Basque Country, such as Construcciones Amenábar and Fhimasa.

He knows the ins and outs of the railway world well. Among the professions mentioned, he was director of the Basque Railway Network – Euskal Trenbide Sarea, in addition to other positions related to the railway universe.

Luis Pedro Marco de La Peña arrives at Adif after the dismissal of Ángel Contreras as head of the public company. Despite his relationship with the “Koldo case”, Transport denies that his dismissal had anything to do with this.

Puente has taken the decision to terminate his contract and communicated it to the person concerned last Friday. In addition to the obvious problems in recent months of the railway network, to which is added the Euromed derailment at Sants and breakdown at Atocha last week, They have exhausted the minister’s patience.

It should be remembered, however, that the summary of the “Koldo Case” concerns Ángel Contreras with alleged favors granted to certain contracting companies of Adif while he was General Director of Conservation and Maintenance of the infrastructure manager.

A difficult question to separate, especially when Contreras arrived from this direction to the presidency of Adif only ten months ago.

He did it for to replace Maria Luisa Dominguez, who was fired by Puente himself after the change of government. and while the minister was putting together what was to be his trusted team within the ministry and all its associated companies.

Ten months later, Contreras’ management mistakes at Adif have cost him his job. And not just him. In recent weeks The company’s chief of staff, Michaux Miranda, was also fired.this one yes because of its “procedural situation” in the context of the Koldo affair.

In the transport sector, it is estimated that there will be new movements in the coming weeks, already with Marco de la Peña at the head of Adif. He will be the one to recompose the management team.and you will have free rein to make any changes you deem appropriate.
