He swore he was on a campaign to go all the way. Finally, Elisabeth Borne withdrew from the race for the Renaissance presidency. Until now the only declared candidate, the former prime minister made her decision official on Wednesday, October 29, in a joint press release with Gabriel Attal, before announcing her candidacy in the afternoon, through a letter sent to her party members.
“Neither the situation of our country nor that of our party would support division”the two former prime ministers write that “We are committed to creating the conditions for the broadest possible meeting”. A “reunion” that was won with a hard fight after weeks of bitter negotiations in which each side had commissioned negotiators: the former minister Franck Riester for Gabriel Attal and the Val-de-Marne deputy Guillaume Gouffier Valente for Elisabeth Terminal.
The two parties finally agreed to share key positions, in particular the composition of the executive council and the national investiture commission, of which a quarter should be appointed by Elisabeth Borne. The latter will become, incidentally, president of the national council, a position created for the occasion.

“ The objective was that Gabriel Attal did not have all the levers to turn it into a presidential team at this time”We commented in the former prime minister’s camp. Gabriel Attal can be satisfied, however, that he has won his case over the main reason for disagreement: his dual role as president of the Ensemble pour la République (EPR) group and future secretary general of the party. “He indicated that he did not want to leave the presidency of the group”those around him confirm.
Will patching things up be enough to put the pieces back together? To the point of worrying its honorary president, Emmanuel Macron, eager to reach an agreement between the two candidates, to guarantee “unit” Renaissance.
Once the merchants’ calculations have been resolved, Gabriel Attal can continue his march in this election that takes place in two stages, with the election by the members of a list of 150 candidates for the national council, during a virtual congress, on the 23rd. November. and 24. Then, the appointment of a new secretary general by the members of the different governing bodies, on December 7, during an event organized in Paris.
