Within five days of Molenbek’s road in Belgium are filled with dances, music, theatrical performances, discussions and parties. This is the Molenfest2025 festival, which is trying to give another picture of the Belgian municipality, which was described as a “terrorist area” after there were many jihadists who pursued Europe with a series of terrorist attacks.
Now the city claims to be a European capital of culture for 2030.
“The dream began in 2016, after the terrorist attacks in Paris and Brussels, and Molenbek became known all over the world, but this nomination is an opportunity to show another Molenbek, Molenbek, rich in its diversity, his youth,” the Molenfest2025 Organizational Committee.
A series of seminars was organized to create costumes, choreography and music, which will be used in parades, as well as in dance, circus and theatrical performances.
“There are cultural expressions on the part of many communities, many young people, so living art is present, as well as visual art, cinema. Most importantly, there are many projects in public places, many projects that are directly related to residents, these were very often free, interpreted projects, ”says Jean Gosan, member of the Molenfest2025 Organizational Committee.
Molenbek has about 100 thousand inhabitants, out of 140 nationalities, and 40% – up to 20 years. This is one of the poorest areas of Belgium, with the risk that poverty registers the second largest percentage in the country.
