Pilgrimage to Uman: Hasidim make urgent appeal to Knesset members

More than 16,000 people planning to travel from Moldova to Uman received notices of flight cancellations from airlines. This came as Moldovan authorities expressed concern about receiving a large number of pilgrims without official Israeli involvement in organizing their trip.

The chairman of the Breslov Hasidim Association in Uman, Rabbi Nathan Ben-Nun, made an official appeal to Knesset members representing religious and ultra-Orthodox groups to help ensure that pilgrims can reach Uman.

In his letter, Rabbi Nathan Ben-Nun expressed his discontent with the fact that the Hasidim feel like “citizens of a backward country, incapable of solving even minor problems.” He stressed that the crisis was the fault of the State of Israel and called on it to take steps to eliminate it.

The rabbi stressed that for Breslav Hasidim visiting Uman on Rosh Hashanah is a sacred rite. He expressed hope for active intervention to resolve the problem and warned that without government help the situation could lead to a “serious crisis” and a “terrible and intolerable spectacle.”

Previously, Kursor wrote that the ongoing Russian military aggression against Ukraine poses serious threats to life and security, making it difficult to ensure the safety of foreign citizens. Uman does not have sufficient civil protection facilities to provide shelter for all Hasidic pilgrims in the event of a threat.
