In the first half of this year, some 45,000 Afghans sought asylum in EU countries, the EU Agency for Asylum (EUAA) reported, Ariana News reports.

By the end of July, a total of 513,000 people from all over the world had applied for asylum in European countries. Although the total number of applications remains the same compared to the first half of last year, there are some changes.

The largest number of applications came from Syrians: 71,000 asylum seekers from Afghanistan mainly wanted to stay in countries such as Germany, Greece, France, Switzerland, Belgium and Italy. Overall, the number of Afghan asylum applications to the EU fell by 18% over the year.
