General Director of Iranian Railways Jabbar Ali Zakeri and Chairman of the Russian Railways Board (RZD) Oleg Belozerov discussed strengthening cooperation and emphasized the need to develop the international North-South transport corridor.
The meeting took place within the framework of the 81st meeting of the Railway Transport Council of the CIS States in Tashkent, the Iranian agency Irna reports.
Zakeri noted that political ties between Iran and Russia are at the highest level and that Iranian Railways is committed to expanding cooperation with Russian Railways. He highlighted the importance of paying more attention to the North-South corridor.
He also pointed out the need to closely monitor the development of this project and use existing capacities to increase them.
Oleg Belozerov confirmed that one of Russia’s tasks is the development of the North-South corridor and mentioned that 36 container trains were sent to the Persian Gulf to start transportation along this route.
In his comments on the construction of the Rasht-Astara railway section, which will connect the railways of Russia, Azerbaijan and Iran, he highlighted its importance for the Russian Federation.
