Virus alarm paralyzes children in the US

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has raised the alarm about enterovirus D68 (EV-D68), the agent that causes mild acute myelitis, which paralyzes the spinal cord.

Oku.AzAccording to information reported by “NBC News”, the virus was found in wastewater in the United States.

EV-D68 has been reported to pose a real threat to the nervous system, especially in young children, causing weakness in the legs and arms and leading to paralysis and disability.

“Since there are currently no treatments for mild acute myelitis, the situation is extremely worrying. Even a long course of intensive physical therapy does not guarantee a full recovery after the illness. Many children are left disabled for life,” said Dr. John Smith, the CDC’s senior specialist.

The CDC urged parents to be vigilant and seek immediate medical attention as soon as their child shows the first signs of illness.
