Senator John Thune has called on the US Senate to pass legislation against the International Criminal Court (ICC) if it continues to seek arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other Israeli officials.
This was reported by The Times Of Israel.
Thune noted that the House of Representatives already supported a similar bill and expressed confidence that the Senate should also act decisively.
Earlier, ICC prosecutor Karim Khan sent a request to the Hague pretrial commission asking it to approve arrest warrants for Netanyahu, former Defense Minister Yoav Galant, as well as three Hamas members who were later arrested. killed by Israeli forces. Khan justified his actions by arguing that war crimes may have been committed during the fighting in Gaza.
Thune emphasized that current Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer must ensure the passage of legislation that threatens the ICC with sanctions. But if that doesn’t happen, the senator said, the new Republican majority that will take control of Congress in January will make the issue a top priority.
The senator also assured that Republicans will continue to support Israel as a key ally and will work on other initiatives aimed at strengthening bilateral relations.
The decision on possible sanctions against the ICC, according to Thune, will be a signal that the United States will not allow actions that could undermine the security of Israel and its leaders.
Previously, Kursor wrote that the ICC’s chief prosecutor, who accuses Israel of genocide, could face trial.
