Andalusia offers the sculpture of “San Bruno”, by Martínez Montañés, for an exhibition at the Cathedral of Valladolid

The Minister of Culture, Tourism and Sports, Gonzalo Santonja, met yesterday in Seville with the Minister of Culture and Sports of Andalusia, Patricia del Pozo, to advance the design of future cultural projects between the administrations of Castile and Leon and Andalusia, reports the regional executive.

As stated in a statement from the Authority, the good harmony between the two owners was materialized in the transfer, by the Authority of Andalusia, to Castilla y León, of the famous sculptural work of Juan Martínez Montañés “San Bruno”.

It is one of the unique works of the Fine Arts of Seville, it was commissioned to Martínez Montañés in 1634 on the occasion of the renovation of the chapel of San Bruno, in the so-called Cloister of San Miguel de la Cartuja de Santa María. de las Cuevas. The master of Jaén, with his characteristic elegance, created a sober sculpture that perfectly combines the essence of the model, promoter of hermitism as a path to holiness, and the Carthusian principles of silence, solitude and austerity.

The Junta de Castilla y León supports this exhibition which will be organized by the Ages of Man Foundation and this will serve to “bring all citizens closer to two outstanding sculptors in the history of Spanish art: Gregorio Fernández (1576-1636) and Juan Martínez Montañés (1569-1649).

The statement recalls that both masters, belonging to the same generation and within the same coordinates of thought, “brought sculptural art to one of its most brilliant moments, favoring the passage from the aesthetics of the final Mannerism to the naturalistic Baroque of the first decades” of the 17th century. None of the sculptors of the Spanish Golden Age had as much impact as these two illustrious image makers, whose work is the subject of studies not only in Spain but also in the rest of Europe and in the American territories.

The exhibition will delve into the similarities and differences between the two masters, relating the same sculptural type, trying to make the works dialogue so that the viewer can immediately draw conclusions about the determining characters of each of these two great architects of the gouge and investigate the different ways of confronting the expression of the sacred in Castile and León and Andalusia.
