We ourselves know where and how many polling stations to open – EADaily, September 18, 2024 – Politics News, Russia News

The decision on the number of polling stations in Russia is a matter of internal policy in Moldova and the Kremlin has no right to dictate this, said Deputy Chairman of the Central Election Commission of the Republic of Moldova Pavel Postica today, September 18.

This was his response to the words of the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry. Maria Zakharova that Chisinau, under “implausible and absurd pretexts,” decided to limit the ability of its compatriots to vote in this fall’s presidential elections.

Postica reiterated the official position of the CEC: the decision to reduce the number of polling stations in Russia from 17 to 5 was taken due to security risks, as well as the downward trend in the electoral participation of citizens of the Republic of Moldova in the Russian Federation.

“Yes, the reduction of polling stations is an unpopular measure, but it strictly complies with legal norms and is based, first and foremost, on the concern of the constitutional authorities for the individual safety of voters and electoral workers.” – concluded Pavel Postica.

Recall that on October 20, Moldova will host elections for the head of state and a constitutional referendum on European integration. The Central Election Commission of Moldova decided to open 234 polling stations abroad. Initially, it was discussed that there would be between 17 and 29 of them in the Russian Federation, but the Commission later changed its decision, citing the fact that “the security situation in Russia has significantly deteriorated during 2024.”

The CCA proposes to open the largest number of polling stations in Italy: 60. Next in line are Germany (26), France (20), Great Britain (17), the United States (16), Romania (16), Spain (11), Ireland (10). In other countries, from one to six sites.

As reported EADaily According to Maria Zakharova, such statements by the Central Election Commission of Moldova are obviously absurd and detached from reality. The diplomat stressed that there have never been any security problems.

“This can only be considered a manifestation of the fear and uncertainty of the ruling regime about its own victory if it plays on equal terms with the opposition, as well as the continuation of the process of exterminating the electorate of those candidates who oppose the breaking of ties with our country,” — Maria Zakharova summed up.
