“Unfortunately, the pressing challenges posed by climate change and its strong impact on human displacement are now more important than ever. Climate-related disasters are estimated to have steadily increased annual displacements over the past decade.”
Oku.Az This was reported by the head of the State Migration Service, Vusal Huseynov, during the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change – COP29, which was held in the Blue Zone under the theme ” COP29: Strengthening global cooperation on integrated solutions for the displacement of people in the context of climate change,” he said at the high-level panel meeting.
He noted that studies show that if necessary adaptation measures are not implemented, the increase in climate change-related disasters may lead to an increase in the scale of displacement in many parts of the world:
“In this context, it is important to promote dialogue around the collective understanding of the relationship between human displacement and climate change, which are the main objectives of today’s debates, to raise awareness among relevant stakeholders, as well as to identify inclusive and holistic strategies to build resilience to climate change and develop adaptation plans. Our discussions here will also focus on stimulating activities.
