Two dead in an Israeli attack in the heart of Beirut; Firefighters try to control the fire.
Two people were killed and 13 wounded on Sunday afternoon in an Israeli attack in central Beirut, the Lebanese Ministry of Health reported in X.
The attack occurred in the commercial area of Mar Elías. The attack hit an electronics store and a car, a security source speaking on condition of anonymity told Agence France-Presse (AFP). Firefighters used their water cannons to extinguish the flames of the fire that destroyed two floors of the store, according to AFP correspondents.
Many people who fled the bombings of Israel, in war against the Lebanese Islamist movement, in the south of the country, had found refuge in recent weeks in this district.
A deputy from the Jamaa Islamiya group, Imad Hout, denied that one of the centers of the group allied to Hezbollah and Hamas has been hit or is the target of the Israeli attack. “No center or institution affiliated with the group is located in the target area of the strike and no member of the group was the target”Hout declared to AFP, denying information from the Lebanese National Information Agency (NNA).
This is the second attack aimed at the heart of Beirut on Sunday, after the first in the morning in which the media chief of Hezbollah, a pro-Iran Islamist movement, Mohammad Afif, was killed.
