The powerful American truckers’ union, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, announced on Wednesday, September 18, that it would renounce its official support for one of the presidential candidates, breaking with a quarter-century of support for the Democrats.
The Democratic Party has been able to count on the loyal support of the Teamsters since 2000, and this is the first time since 1996 that the union has chosen not to endorse any candidate. Two polls released Wednesday show that the base is in favor of supporting Donald Trump.
Representatives of the 1.3 million-member union met with Kamala Harris on Monday. The Teamsters have supported Democratic candidates in every election since Al Gore: John Kerry, Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden. They had previously supported Ronald Reagan in 1984, George HW Bush in 1988 and then Bill Clinton in 1992.
