The Spanish state provides private health insurance to one and a half million civil servants, who benefit from special treatment paid for by all taxpayers. This special treatment means faster diagnoses, less waiting list, help with glasses, for the dentist… for them and their families. Instead of contributing to Social Security, these civil servants pay a contribution to MUFACE, the General Mutual Fund for State Civil Servants. It is not a compulsory system, civil servants can choose between public or private medicine, but 70% choose the latter option.
This year, it is time to renew the agreement between the State and insurers for the health management of MUFACE, and in the middle of this negotiation the questions arise: Should we really renew this system? Isn’t it desirable for public employees to benefit from public health care? Why exactly is this happening? We try to answer all these questions with elDiario.es journalists SofĂa PĂ©rez Mendoza and David Noriega.
