He Leonese painter Serafín Álvarez Prieto, won the prestigious BMW Digital Art Award on Monday thanks to his work “Spell”, which “invites the viewer into a dreamlike world where the boundaries of time and space are blurred in a surreal environment full of magic and absurdity” .

The Leonese received the award yesterday in a ceremony in which the Biscayan artist Damaris Pan, with an exhibition currently at the Patio Herreriano Museum in Valladolid, won the 39th edition of the BMW Painting Prize for his work “All the monsters are human II”. ‘, an edition “marked by the memory of the victims of Dana” and in which “solidarity and fraternity” were the axis around which the entire gala revolved, chaired by the Queen Emeritus, Doña Sofía, and presented by the actress Paz Vega.

The jury, composed of eminent art professionals such as the painter and sculptor Antonio López, the director of the Museum of Fine Arts of Bilbao, former director of the Prado Museum, Miguel Zugaza, the founder and president of the Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, Patrizia Sandretto, the artistic director of the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum in Madrid, Guillermo Solana, and the director of the Carasso Foundation, Lucía Casani, selected the two winners during a year in which a participation record was broken with more than 1,700 artists.

In this sense, the president of the BMW Group in Spain and Portugal, Manuel Terroba, highlighted that the BMW Painting Prize “continues to consolidate itself as an international reference, with the participation of 39 different nationalities”, which “demonstrates that the prize is positioned as a global showcase for contemporary art.

Since its creation in 1986, the BMW Painting Prize has evolved alongside the Spanish art scene, consolidating itself as one of the most prestigious prizes in the country. With almost 40 years of history, more than 27,000 artists have participated in this competition which has adapted to new trends and reaffirms the BMW Group’s commitment to contemporary forms of artistic expression, including the digital sphere.
