“Pro-Iran militias”: Israeli Foreign Minister urges UN Security Council to “act urgently” to pressure Iraq
Israel’s foreign minister on Monday urged the UN Security Council to “act urgently” that Iraq stop the drone attacks against Israel perpetrated from its territory by “Pro-Iran militias”.
“This afternoon I sent a letter to the president of the UN Security Council calling for immediate action regarding the activity of pro-Iran militias in Iraq, whose territory is being used to attack Israel.”writes Gideon Saar about X.
“The Iraqi government has the responsibility to prevent its territory from being used as a base for attacks against other nations”adds Mr. Saar. “Israel calls on the Iraqi government to fulfill its obligations and take immediate measures to stop and prevent its attacks”the text continues, pointing out “that Israel has the inherent right to defend itself, as provided in the Charter of the United Nations, and to take all necessary measures to protect itself and its citizens against hostile acts […] Iranian-backed militias in Iraq ».
In Iraq, Shiite paramilitary groups created in the chaos that followed the 2003 US invasion have formed an alliance called the Islamic Resistance in Iraq, part of what Iran calls the “axis of resistance” to Israel.
The Islamic Resistance in Iraq periodically claims responsibility for explosive drone attacks against Israel. Many of these planes are intercepted by Israeli air defenses, but in early October a drone fired from Iraq killed two Israeli soldiers and wounded 24 others at a military base in the Syrian Golan, occupied and annexed by Israel.
