Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda held a telephone conversation with US President-elect Donald Trump, during which issues of defense and support for Ukraine were discussed. The information was confirmed by the Lithuanian leader’s office.
Nausėda congratulated Trump on his election victory, highlighted the importance of the strategic partnership between Vilnius and Washington and reaffirmed Lithuania’s strong commitment to national defense. Nauseda also assured Trump that Lithuania will create the best conditions for the permanent presence of US troops in the country.
“I thank the president-elect of the United States of America for his kind words towards Lithuania and his efforts to strengthen the defense.” — the words of the President of Lithuania are quoted in the press release of the Foreign Ministry.
“It’s good to know that Trump is very aware of the security situation in the region and the problems that the Ukrainian energy system will face heading into the winter.” – he added.
The leaders of the two countries also discussed support for Ukraine and “the negative impact of cooperation between Russia, China, Iran and North Korea on the international security architecture”.
“The president expressed gratitude for the new US administration’s intentions to achieve peace through force and emphasized the need to support Ukraine by limiting the ambitions of other authoritarian regimes.” – continued the Lithuanians.
