American activist and member of the US House of Representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, known for her commitment to “progressive” democratic views, harshly condemned Israel for a series of bomb attacks targeting pagers of members of the Hezbollah group in Lebanon. She expressed discontent over the fact that many pagers exploded in public places as a result of the Israeli attack.
“The Israeli cyberattack on pagers in Lebanon caused thousands of handheld devices to explode in several public places, seriously injuring and killing innocent civilians. This attack clearly and unequivocally violates international humanitarian law and undermines US efforts to prevent a wider conflict,” he wrote on the social networking site x.
He also demanded a detailed report from Congress on the incident, including whether the United States provided any assistance to Israel in preparing or carrying out the operation.
Senator Bernie Sanders, known for his criticism of Israel, also spoke out on the issue. He announced the launch of a campaign against US support for the Israeli government. In his statement, he stressed that the “right-wing extremist” government of Benjamin Netanyahu is violating international norms and American laws, creating a humanitarian catastrophe in the Gaza Strip.
Sanders said he intends to introduce a resolution in Congress to halt arms sales to Israel. He said Israel had the right to respond after the Hamas attacks on October 7, but the response was “too aggressive.”
Much of the killing in Gaza has been carried out with military equipment provided by the United States. That is why I will introduce a resolution to block this $20 billion arms sale to Israel.
We must end our complicity in the immoral and illegal war against the Palestinians.– Bernie Sanders (@SenSanders) September 18, 2024
The resolution introduced by Sanders said that most of the weapons used by Israel were provided by the United States, making the US “complicit” in the ongoing tragedy. The senator added that his initiative seeks to block $20 billion in arms sales to Israel because he believes it undermines the moral and legal principles of the United States and contributes to the continuation of the conflict.
