Ban on UNRWA activities in Israel: Norway to appeal to ICJ

Norway plans to ask the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to issue an advisory opinion condemning the Israeli government’s actions related to the termination of cooperation with the UNRWA agency, which provides support to the Palestinian Arabs.

Deputy Foreign Minister Andreas Motzfeldt Krawik held preliminary consultations at the UN in New York. Its objective was to discuss the draft resolution that will be presented to the UN General Assembly. The document requests an advisory opinion from the ICJ aimed at supporting and preserving the activities of UNRWA.

The measure, which will be put to a vote next month, has already received significant support from UNRWA and a growing number of Arab states.

“The international community cannot accept that the UN, international humanitarian organizations and states continue to face systematic obstacles to working in Palestine and delivering humanitarian aid to Palestinians under occupation,” said Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre.

He noted that Norway requests the ICJ to consider Israel’s obligations in terms of assistance to international organizations, including the UN, and to States in providing humanitarian assistance to the Palestinian Arabs.

Kursor previously wrote that a UNRWA employee told investigators that Hamas militants used the agency’s vehicles and equipment to cover their activities. During the evacuation of Jabaliya, the IDF 162nd Division detained several hundred terrorist suspects and subsequently interrogated them.

During the audit, dozens of Gazans reported that they faced pressure and threats from Hamas terrorists, whose goal was to disrupt their evacuation.
