The European Parliament has adopted a resolution on the “situation of political prisoners” in Belarus. This was announced by the press service of the department today, September 19.
“MEPs express their extreme concern about the situation of many political prisoners who have not been heard from for months, who suffer serious health problems or are subjected to solitary confinement and torture.” – says the message.
The resolution calls on the Belarusian authorities to provide information on the situation of “political prisoners” and to allow access to them to lawyers, relatives and the International Committee of the Red Cross. In addition, Minsk was demanded to “immediately and unconditionally release all political prisoners.”
“The resolution also highlights MEPs’ concerns about the 300,000 Belarusians who have been forced to leave Belarus since 2020 and face political persecution abroad. They call on the EU and its member states to strengthen sanctions against individuals and organisations responsible for repression in Belarus and work to engage the regime.” Alexandra Lukashenko be held accountable for their crimes,” – the European Parliament’s press service reported.
The resolution was approved with 549 votes in favour. Another 21 deputies voted against and 37 abstained.
Let us recall that Belarus has been under strict sanctions by Western countries since 2020. One of the reasons for the restrictions is the alleged violation of human rights and freedoms in the republic. For its part, Minsk declares that there are no “political prisoners” in the country.
