Russia assures that Ukraine used long-range American missiles -ATACMS- for the first time this Tuesday to attack their territory. According to a statement published by Kremlin news agencies, Russian troops intercepted five of six missiles launched in the Bryansk region, northwest of Kursk. An attack which has already been confirmed by senior American and Ukrainian officials to the New York Times.
This coup reportedly took place just two days after it became known that United States President Joe Biden gave Kyiv permission to use these weapons and thus thwart attacks by Russian and North Korean troops in the Kursk region, in western Russia. It also coincides with Moscow’s announcement coming hours after Russian President Vladimir Putin approved a military doctrine which allows it to respond with nuclear weapons to a conventional attack.
For its part, what the Ukrainian general staff confirmed on Tuesday was an attack on a military warehouse in the Russian town of Karachev, approximately 115 kilometers from the border. Neither the General Staff nor the Defense Ministry would comment on the missiles used, saying it was classified information.
Biden’s decision is of great political significance because it involves questioning one of several red lines that Russian President Vladimir Putin has used to threaten to escalate the conflict to a nuclear attack. Moreover, he comes in added timemore than a year after Ukraine insisted on its green light and with two months remaining for Biden leaves the White House and give way to Donald Trump who, presumably, will turn off the aid tap to kyiv.
