Over the past hundred years, several important events in Azerbaijan’s history have taken place in September. These events are related to the measures taken to strengthen the independence and sovereignty of the republic.
On September 15, 1918, Baku was liberated from the Central-Caspian forces of Dashnaks and Bolsheviks. However, this battle did not put an end to the struggle of the Armenians and the Bolsheviks who defended them against the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic. This lasted until the collapse of the independent state. The Armenian-Bolshevik couple managed to establish on the territory of Azerbaijan an institution called the “Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Province”.
In the autumn of 1988, 300,000 Azerbaijanis were expelled from what is now Armenia, their historic home, and were forcibly deprived of their citizenship and property. These crimes were also committed by the same couple under a slightly different name.
On September 23, 1989, at the extraordinary session of the current Parliament, the Supreme Soviet of the Azerbaijan SSR, the Constitutional Law “On the Sovereignty of the Azerbaijan SSR” was adopted.
In September, Azerbaijan achieved another success. Thirty years ago, on September 20, 1994, in Baku, the cost of joint oil development in the deepwater layers of the “Azeri-Chirag-Guneshli” fields in the Azerbaijani sector of the Caspian Sea amounted to 7.4 billion. A “product sharing” contract was signed in USD. The agreement was called the “Deal of the Century” for its historical, political and international significance. This encouraged Azerbaijan to host and participate in new regional projects. It subsequently played an important role in liberating lands from occupation.
The point of the struggle for sovereignty and independence (under current conditions) was set as a result of the event held on September 19 and 20, 2023 for 23 hours.

By the way, on October 3, 2019, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev exposed Armenia’s unfounded territorial claims with historical facts and noted that Karabakh and seven surrounding regions are under Armenian occupation at the 16th annual plenary session of the International Discussion Club “Valday” in Sochi, Russia. The Head of State told the world that the conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan should be resolved within the framework of Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity, the UN Charter, Security Council resolutions and the Helsinki Final Act, accepted by the whole world.
President Ilham Aliyev then demonstrated Armenia’s aggressive policy with concrete actions during his speeches at the limited session of the CIS Council of Heads of State on October 11, 2019. On February 15, 2020, he exposed Armenia’s fascist ideology, ethnic cleansing, state terrorism and aggressive policy against Azerbaijan at the Eastern Partnership summit held in video conference format on February 15, 2020, as well as on June 18.
President Ilham Aliyev said at the Munich Security Conference that the Armenian people have already determined their own destiny and have an Armenian state: “My advice will be to look for another place on Earth to determine your own destiny for the second time, not in Azerbaijan!”
The Head of State affirmed that the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan has the same value as the territorial integrity of any other country. President Ilham Aliyev stressed that no positive progress in the region will be possible until Armenia leaves the occupied lands of Azerbaijan and that Azerbaijan will fight for its national interests until the end.
The “Iron Fist” operation, launched on September 27, 2020, to liberate lands, ended with a 44-day war. However, separatists and terrorists are trying to disrupt the security of Azerbaijan through various armed attacks. However, the anti-terrorist operation carried out in September 2023 put an end to the arbitrariness and crimes committed by Armenians and their sponsors on Azerbaijani lands. The root of the so-called regime was unearthed. For the first time in the modern history of Azerbaijan, Armenians who “played games” on their land or wanted to divide it were brought to their knees and the “leaders” of the separatists were arrested.
Ruben Vardanyan, Davit Manukyan, Levon Mnatsakanyan, David Babayan, Arayik Harutyunyan, Bako Sahakyan and Arkady Ghukasyan testify in Baku for all the criminal acts they committed against Azerbaijan.
Until now, Armenians have always rewarded their elders and patrons for the crimes they committed against Azerbaijan. Robert Kocharyan, Serzh Sargsyan and Seyran Ohanyan became presidents of Armenia and held high positions in the state because they organized massacres and genocides in Khojaly, Agdaban and other cities.
Last year’s anti-terrorist measure is also an indicator of Baku’s official determination to restore the country’s sovereignty. Azerbaijani authorities guaranteed territorial integrity on the basis of Article 51 of the UN Charter.
This development is also of great importance in preventing Armenian provocations against Azerbaijan. The Head of State stated: “Therefore, we can defend ourselves and punish the aggressor in such a way that he does not dare to look in our direction again.”
The anti-terrorist operation diverted Armenia’s attention from Azerbaijan and extinguished the hotbed of criminal activity in these lands. After this event, the official proposal of Baku on direct and bilateral meetings without intermediaries was approved.
The events of 19 September effectively put an end to the activities of the neglected and useless OSCE Minsk Group. The event also gave impetus to the start of new projects in the region. Today, the events of September last year play an important role in intensifying the discussions on the opening of the Zangezur highway.
This event marked the inclusion of another glorious day in the modern history of Azerbaijan. On September 19, President Ilham Aliyev signed the Decree “On the establishment of the Day of State Sovereignty in the Republic of Azerbaijan”. After that, the Day of State Sovereignty in the Republic of Azerbaijan will be celebrated every year on September 20.
Azerbaijan’s friends rejoice in Azerbaijan’s holiday and ignore its enemies. British Foreign Secretary David Lemmy supported Azerbaijan’s liberation of Karabakh from Armenian occupation: “Azerbaijan succeeded in liberating the territories it lost in the early 1990s.”
Thus, over the past 106 years, Azerbaijan has restored its territorial integrity within the existing international conditions and expelled the invader. May your sovereignty and territorial integrity be permanent, Azerbaijan! Towards new successes in new Septembers…
