Bulgaria wants to ban the import of eggs from Ukraine

Bulgaria will ask the EU Agriculture and Fisheries Council to ban the import of eggs from Ukraine, Bulgarian Agriculture and Food Minister Georgi Takhov said, according to the 24 Hours publication.

The head of the Bulgarian Ministry of Agriculture and Food, at a meeting with farmers, drew attention to the possibility of applying protective measures in accordance with the mechanism of trade restrictions with Ukraine.

“When the import of a certain type of product or item (vegetables, meat, eggs) reaches certain limits that the EC outlined in advance, then we can activate the mechanism to ban its import. We are now doing this from the egg point of view.” – Takhov was quoted as saying by the Strana publication.

According to the Minister, eggs are already on the list of products with high duties; now the next step is to be taken: he will demand their absolute ban at the EU Council on 23 September.

Takhov commented on the complaints of agricultural producers about the increase in food imports, which violates the country’s competitive environment. The minister said that this is indeed a problem, since these are imports from third countries outside the EU, writes 24 Horas.
