A little-studied superbug has recently been reported to be the cause of sepsis in neonatal intensive care units in hospitals around the world. These microorganisms, which are resistant (tolerant) to antibiotics and pose a serious threat to human health, have long worried scientists. According to him, superbugs spread mainly in hospitals because they have no competition there.
“Resistant bacteria have a unique ability to resist the effects of various antibiotics. Their main habitat is hospitals. Here they find favorable conditions for living and multiplying. This is because, in the process of adapting to antibiotics, bacteria get rid of certain coatings, which are usually targeted by drugs, thus gaining an advantage over other microorganisms in the hospital environment,” said the doctor.
According to him, fighting these bacteria is very difficult. These bacteria include dangerous infections such as Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and strains of E. coli (colic).
“These microorganisms cause serious infections that are extremely difficult to combat with conventional treatment methods. A particularly worrying situation is observed in intensive care units. This occurs even in many developed countries such as France and the United States. In the future, humanity will have to devote significant resources to combating these microorganisms, because they can become a dominant threat among all infectious diseases,” he added.
According to the expert, scientists around the world are working on creating new methods to combat superbugs.
“A promising direction is the development of antimicrobial peptides and similar substances. These compounds have the ability to kill bacteria in a different way than conventional antibiotics, which may be the key to overcoming drug resistance.”
The scientist stressed that the preparation of such a drug is very expensive and humanity is losing the race in which bacteria are rapidly becoming resistant to new antibiotics.
