Luisa Chocarro d’Erauso (Pamplona, 1996), PhD student in Health Sciences in the Public University of Navarre (UPNA)received the award for the best basic science poster at the congress of the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO)which took place from September 13 to 17 in Barcelona.
This predoctoral researcher at Navarrabiomed OncoImmunology Unitcenter of biomedical research of the Government of Navarre and the academic institution, described the preclinical development of an innovative therapeutic strategy to counter resistance to immunotherapy in lung cancer.
THE investigation identifies novel therapeutic targets that can be inhibited pharmacologically, in combination with immunotherapy, to resistance to reverse processing.
THE immunotherapy drugs They activate patients’ defenses, so that their immune system can recognize cancer cells and eliminate them more effectively. However, Some patients develop resistance to this treatmentso it’s not effective.
In the search for therapeutic alternativesLuisa Chocarro has located other specific points in cells that could be blocked by other drugs to activate the immune system, in combination with immunotherapy.
“These results will allow us to develop new precision therapies with the aim that more cancer patients can benefit from the treatment,” explains Luisa Chocarro.
This research received funding from the Spanish Association against Cancerthe Carlos III Health Institute (ISCIII), the Government of Navarra and the European Union.
