“For the first time in history, tourism is integrated into the COP agenda.”
Oku.Az informs that the President of the State Tourism Agency of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Fuad Naghiyev, spoke these words during his speech at the first meeting of ministers on improving climate action in the tourism sector within the framework of Tourism Day in COP29.
He said this moment is a historic event, because tourism takes its rightful place at the center of the global climate conversation:
“As the host country of COP29, Azerbaijan is deeply committed to advancing climate action across all sectors. Today, we are honored to bring together ministers, leaders and stakeholders from around the world to discuss the crucial role of tourism in the fight against climate change.”
F. Nagiyev said that while the number of tourists around the world continues to grow, the sector’s emissions are expected to increase unless action is taken:
“Today we find ourselves at a crossroads. The tourism sector can continue as usual or lead the transformation towards a renewable, low-carbon future. We believe that tourism has the opportunity to be part of the solution.
“Today’s tourism ministerial event serves as an opportunity to create a basis for cooperation and action in the tourism sector.”
