In 2023, there were 123,452 serious acts of gender-based violence in Spain, 9.8% more than in 2022.

In 2023, a total of 123,452 serious acts of gender-based violence9.8% more than in 2022 and 48% more than five years ago, according to data from the Crime Statistics Portal of the Ministry of the Interior.

For the department headed by Fernando Grande-MarlaskaHomicide, injury, crimes against liberty, against moral integrity, against sexual freedom or “any other crime committed with violence or intimidation” against a cohabitant or ex-spouse fall into the category of serious acts.

Internal sources specify that this category of victimization also includes abortion of the victim, injuries to the fetus and acts committed against the minor sons and daughters of the victims in a context of indirect violence.

Are Andalusiawith 25,806 victimizations; the Valencian Communitywith 17,812; Madridwith 17,382; Cataloniawith 9,240 and Canary Islandswith 8,297, Autonomous communities that have recorded the highest number of female victims of serious events in the field of gender-based violence in 2023.

They continuein descending order, Balearic Islands (with 5,998 victims), Murcia (5,687), Galicia (5,499), Castile-La Mancha (5.382), the Basque Country (4,879), Castile and Leon (4,618), Aragon (3,330), Asturias (2,346), Extremadura (2.198), Navarre (1861), Cantabria (1,410), La Rioja (875), Melilla (350) and Ceuta (254).

In addition, the Interior Ministry has counted 228 victims abroad.

The number of serious incidents recorded by this ministry shows an upward trend since 2015with the only exception of 2020, where there was a decline due to the lockdown as part of the pandemic.

They were 123,452 in 2023, 112,446 in 2022, 98,230 in 2021, 87,475 in 2020, 90,674 in 2019, 83,437 in 2018, 80,597 in 2017, 77,562 in 2016 and 76,887 in 2015.
