For the moment, Alberto Núñez Feijóo’s political priority is not to overthrow Pedro Sánchez, which will depend on the electoral call, but before that, to reduce the electoral weight of Vox, which remains unscathed in all the polls. And as has been the case for some years, the only tactic that the PP believes in to achieve this is to become as extreme right as Santiago Abascal’s party. Feijóo’s current trip to Italy to praise the anti-immigration policy of the neo-fascist Giorgia Meloni is proof that the path taken by the popular in this direction has no limits.
It seems clear that one of the most important reasons for the popular support for Vox (13% of the total, according to the latest CIS barometer) is its radical position on immigration and in particular its demand that immigrants who, even if they regularize their situation in Spain, be returned without further consideration to their country of origin. This is accompanied by systematic complaints that a good part of the crimes committed in Spain involve immigrants. Which is radically false, according to all the statistics.
