Moscow hopes that Washington and Seoul will understand the risks of escalating military tensions on the Korean Peninsula and attempts to settle scores with Pyongyang, said Maria Zakharova, the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, at a briefing on the sidelines of the IV Eurasian Women’s Forum.
“The implementation of revanchist plans to change the status quo on the peninsula is leading to an uncontrollable escalation of military tension. And we hope that the United States and South Korea will understand the risks of further fuelling military hysteria and attempts to settle scores with the DPRK, which has the same sovereignty as all UN member countries that have the legal right to self-defence.” — the diplomat said, TASS reports.
The official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry noted that the United States and South Korea continue to increase military activity on the Korean Peninsula. According to him, the allies are conducting exercises in the areas adjacent to the demilitarized zone and in the Yellow Sea near the northern demarcation line, and are also simulating the deployment and use of US strategic and tactical nuclear forces in the event of a large-scale military conflict on the peninsula.
“Washington and Seoul are building trilateral military cooperation involving Tokyo, promoting joint plans to conduct trilateral inter-service training on a regular basis. In parallel, under the auspices of South Korea, work is underway to revive a rudimentary and purely nominal structure in the form of the so-called UN command, which is actually run not by the UN but by the Pentagon. At the meetings of the defense ministers of the three countries, the ground is being prepared for a possible mobilization of the so-called coalition in a hypothetical conflict against the DPRK.” – Zakharova stressed.
