Bad debts contained, according to the first figures

An unprecedented security system for the Olympic and Paralympic Games (JOP) to keep crime at bay. This is what can be seen from the various crime figures and the activity of the security forces, who have tried to deploy an appropriate response for each type of threat.

Among them is the “anti-fraud working group” created by the national directorate of the judicial police (DNPJ). Launched in early 2024, it identified around 500 complaints and reports. “We initially identified two major risks: counterfeit bills and false rental advertisements on the platforms”“Explains Magali Caillat, deputy director of the DNPJ’s fight against financial crimes. In the end, her services recorded only 23 complaints of scams related to fake rental advertisements, but they saw another mode of operation flourish, unexpectedly, long before the JOP: false rentals of premises for food trucks. After 170 restaurateurs were harmed, the task force was able to identify and arrest the scammers in March, before beginning work to raise awareness among food artisans.

“It was from May onwards that fake tickets began to appear, for which we had 238 complaints or claims, with an average loss of 335 euros per person.” “Most of the victims were “hooked” on Facebook by criminals eager to gain the trust of their target,” explains Magali Caillat. Thirty-four people were defrauded by the same team of four, who will be brought before the court in Nanterre in December.

Significant police presence

As regards public crime, the Ministerial Service of Statistics for Internal Security (SSMSI) published on Thursday 19 September its latest weekly monitoring of crimes and misdemeanours recorded during the Olympic period. According to statisticians from Place Beauvau, “Crime recorded by the police and gendarmerie services remained generally stable between the beginning of July and the end of the JOP.” Behind this stability, some regions, and in particular the areas hosting events in the Ile-de-France region, experienced a slightly calmer summer than elsewhere.

Reports of non-violent robberies in the Ile-de-France area remained constant during the month of July, before falling during the month of August, with a 31% decrease in robbery reports the week of August 12, compared to the week of August 1.Ahem July as a reference week. In contrast, outside the Olympic host regions, reports of theft were 10 to 20% higher from early July to mid-August than during the reference week.
