Who is Ibrahim Aqil, the leader “eliminated” by Israel in the bombings against Hezbollah in Beirut?

This afternoon’s Israeli attack on a building in Beirut’s southern suburbs known as Dahye was directed against Hezbollah’s top commander: Ibrahim Aqil. This is the information that the Israeli Defense Ministry has transmitted to the national media. Also the death of the target. This is not the only victim of the operation. There are at least nine dead and 59 injured, according to the Ministry of Public Health.

Ibrahim Aqil, alias Tahsin, was part of the Jihad Council, Hezbollah’s main military body, and was a wanted and captured figure by the United States, whose government last year offered a $7 million reward for information on his location.

Aqil was one of the members of the cell that claimed responsibility for the bombing of a U.S. Marine barracks in Beirut in 1983, in which 241 people died. And he is also accused of directing the kidnapping of American and German citizens in Lebanon in the 1980s. The Israeli army announced that a meeting will be held this Friday between the army chief of staff, Herzi Halevi, with the head of the Northern Command and the commanders of the various military divisions in charge of the Lebanese front.

This is the third Israeli bombardment on Dahye since the crossfire between Hezbollah and the Jewish state began on October 8, alongside and in response to the war in Gaza. The two previous ones respectively killed a senior Hamas commander, Saleh al-Arourilast January; and Hezbollah’s top military commander, Fouad Choukrend of July.
