An international team of scientists from Europe and the United States conducted a large-scale study to determine the primary source of COVID-19 infection. It turned out that the center of the global pandemic was a seafood market in Wuhan, China.

Researchers analyzed the genetic data of the virus and concluded that the common ancestor of the SARS-CoV-2 genotypes detected in the Wuhan market is the same as the genotype that caused the pandemic. This indicates that the Huanan market is the starting point for the spread of the deadly infection to the whole world.
Scientists have also discovered a disturbing fact. The Wuhan market was the site of illegal sale of mammals prone to coronavirus infection. These included bamboo mice, raccoon dogs and snails, most of which were infected with the coronavirus.
It is worth recalling that the first cases of infection with the new coronavirus were recorded in December 2019 in Wuhan. Within just a few months, the infection spread throughout the world and killed millions of people. The COVID-19 pandemic, which has caused enormous damage to people’s health and the global economy, is considered one of the most destructive and large-scale pandemics in modern history.
