The Ukrainian Armed Forces continue to attack key Russian military infrastructure facilities. A recent attack with British Storm Shadow missiles hit a major military facility in the Kursk region. According to sources, this was one of the largest attacks carried out with Western weapons.
Operation scale
According to Forbes, at least ten missiles were launched at a target in the Maryino area. The attack came shortly after Ukraine received permission from its Western partners to use long-range systems on Russian territory. Sources claim that the facility was a point of strategic importance for the command and supply of troops. Such a number of missiles indicates that the objective was of utmost importance.
Experts note that the British Storm Shadow missile, equipped with a Bomb Royal Ordnance Augmented Charge warhead from BAE Systems, is capable of effectively hitting fortified bunkers and other protected objects.
Tactics and risks
To carry out this mission, five Su-24 aircraft were used, each with two missiles. Representatives of the Armed Forces of Ukraine report that the launches were carried out by soldiers of the 7th brigade. The aircraft climbed to high altitudes to achieve a range of about 300 km, allowing them to attack targets while remaining outside the enemy’s range.
However, missions of this type involve serious risks. Former spokesman for the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Yuriy Ignat, highlights that pilots often carry out such operations under fire. Despite this, Storm Shadow attacks are considered critical, as other types of Ukrainian weapons do not always have enough penetration to destroy buried objects.
Consequences of the coup
According to information from Russian sources, the attacked facility could have been a command post from which Russian and possibly North Korean troops were controlled. In early September, the Storm Shadow missile was already used to attack a submarine in a dry dock in Crimea, confirming its high effectiveness against protected targets.
Thus, Ukraine is strengthening its deep destruction capabilities, focusing on the destruction of key elements of the Russian military’s infrastructure.
