Isla Bell left her home on October 4, but remained active on social media until October 7, according to family members. The investigation led police to the apartment of Marat Ganiev, 53, a Russian national living in St Kilda East. Surveillance cameras recorded Bell entering his apartment but he never came out again.
Camera footage shows that a fight occurred in the apartment on the night of October 6-7. Investigators say Ganiev inflicted fatal blows on the girl. He later recruited his friend, Eyal Yafe, 57, to dispose of the body. The girl’s remains were placed in an old refrigerator, wrapped in film and moved to various locations for several days until they ended up in a landfill.
Notably, the refrigerator was originally discovered by a Mulgrave resident who took it to a landfill without even knowing its contents. Only after he noticed a strange smell and contacted police did the investigation locate the suspects.
Ganiev denies murder, saying he doesn’t know how the girl died and claims he only disposed of the body. Yafe also denies any knowledge, stating that he only helped transport the refrigerator, without knowing its contents.
